A small arrow in the bottom right corner of a tool icon means that there are more tools hiding behind it in that same spot:. To view the additional tools, click and hold on the icon. A fly-out menu will open listing the other tools that are available. To choose one of the additional tools, click on its name in the list.

I’ll choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool:. The tool that’s initially displayed in each spot in the toolbar is known as the default tool.

For example, the Rectangular Marquee Tool is the default tool for the second spot from the top. But Photoshop won’t always display the default tool.

Instead, it will display the last tool you selected. Notice that after choosing the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the fly-out menu, the Rectangular Marquee Tool is no longer displayed in the toolbar. The Elliptical Marquee Tool has taken its place:. Then I could select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the menu:. So now that we’ve learned how Photoshop’s toolbar is organized, let’s look at the tools themselves. Below is a quick summary of each of Photoshop’s tools, along with a brief description of what each tool is used for.

The tools are listed in order from top to bottom, and specific tools are covered in more detail in other lessons. To cycle through tools with the same keyboard shortcut, press and hold Shift as you press the letter. The tolerance defines how similar in color a pixel must be to the pixel you click to be filled. Values can range from 0 to A low tolerance fills pixels within a range of color values very similar to the pixel you click.

A high tolerance fills pixels within a broader range. See Lock layers. This may result in more ink than is allowable by the printer. For best results when filling a CMYK image, use the Foreground option with the foreground color set to an appropriate black.

Specify the blending mode and opacity for the paint. This preserves the transparency of the layer. Seamlessly fills the selection with similar image content nearby. For the best results, create a selection that extends slightly into the area you want to replicate. A quick lasso or marquee selection is often sufficient.

Content-aware fills randomly synthesize similar image content. Color Adaptation. Enabled by default Algorithmically blends the color of the fill with the surrounding color.

Select the name of a library of patterns, or choose Load Patterns and navigate to the folder containing the patterns you want to use. You can also apply any one of the included Scripted Patterns to easily create a variety of geometric fill patterns.

Select Scripted Patterns at the bottom of the fill dialog box, and then choose a fill pattern from the Script pop-up menu. If Pattern is dimmed, you need to load a pattern library prior to making a selection. See Manage pattern libraries and presets. Create selection that extends slightly into area you want to replicate. Seamlessly replace selection with Content-aware fill. The work canvas surrounds the image area. You can fill the canvas with a different color that contrasts better with a given image.

Right-click the work canvas, and choose Gray, Black, or Custom. To specify the custom color, choose Select Custom Color. You can use the Stroke command to paint a colored border around a selection, path, or layer. When you create a border this way, it becomes a rasterized part of the current layer. To create shape or layer borders that can be turned on or off like overlays and are anti-aliased to create softer-edged corners and edges, use the Stroke layer effect instead of the Stroke command.

See Layer effects and styles. If the layer contents fill the entire image, a stroke applied outside the layer will not be visible. Specify an opacity and a blending mode. You can draw a circle or square using the elliptical or rectangular marquee tools, and then add a line called a stroke to the selection marquee. Photoshop CC has some excellent new features, building upon the decades of development the program has seen. From content-aware healing fills, smart selection tools and a number of tools for professional photographers, this version of Adobe Photoshop is probably the best yet.

Like with other versions of Adobe Photoshop, CC has a very streamlined and minimalist approach to a graphical user layout. That isn’t to say that it doesn’t have a ton of features. You might expect older PCs to get bogged down when opening larger images or doing extensive image manipulation. With the menus have been changed slightly with CC, it didn’t take very long for us to get used to the new arrangements which were actually minimal.

Thankfully, keyboard shortcuts remain traditional to older versions. If you haven’t used Photoshop before or you are not a seasoned user, we highly recommend getting used to some of the keyboard shortcuts as this can shave a load of time off of whatever task you’re working on. Adobe also provides support for RAW image formats which makes it fully capable of working with images from digital cameras such as Canon, Sony, Nikon or others, including phones.
